Grelen Trails

Grelen now has FIVE miles of trails to discover!  Whether you're looking for a full day excursion, or a light stroll after lunch. There are options for all ages and skills...take a walk up to a beautiful vista overlooking The Nursery or go for a long run/hike through the nursery, meadows & forest over to James Madison's Montpelier Trail System.  With Montpelier's trails, there are over 10+ miles of beautiful trails to explore. The Grelen walking Trails are FREE & open to the public.

Montpelier’s 8+ miles of well-marked walking trails are one of the Virginia Piedmont’s best-kept secrets. Winding through horse pastures, wildflower meadows, and forests, including the Old-Growth Landmark Forest, the trails offer spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and intimate encounters with native plants and wildlife. The Montpelier Trails are open to the public seven days a week during business hours and may be accessed from the trailhead kiosk just below the parking lot at the Visitor center.

Montpelier Trails

Shenandoah's Blue Ridge Mountains are covered by hardwood forests that are home to tens of thousands of animals. The Skyline Drive and Appalachian Trail run the entire length of this narrow park that has more than 500 miles (800 km) of hiking trails along scenic overlooks and waterfalls of the Shenandoah River. The highest peak is Hawksbill Mountain at 4,051 feet (1,235 m).​​​​​​​

HISTORY

The Civil War was pretty traumatic in this area with families often being divided, not unlike now! There are many battle sites in the surrounding area across towards Richmond. The Battle of Jack's Shop was just two miles along the Turnpike and it is said there were some initial skirmishes in the fields by the house
